new 406 owner help! plz rattle/smoke

Post by tanno999 »

Hello just bought my first 406 hdi 2 litre w reg
first off love the car and trying to get it on the road asap.
i bought the car off an older fellow with 137k on the clock but anyways down to my problom i did a normal service (oil filter/air filter/ diesal filter and oil change... now on restrating the engine after service all was well but after a little rev a big bloom of blue/white smoke so i let tick over for a while and it seemed ok smoke cleared so i gave it another rev it was fine about 5 mins later gave it and rev and engine was making a very loud rattle and began reving very high all on its own.
at this point i swicthed off the engine and havent turned it on since only thing that seems out of the ordernery is that the oil is way over maximum any1 heard of this before...

cheers adam

Crikey

First thing is to set the oil level right, not sure why it's high if you did the oil change but a diesel engine will use engine oil as fuel if it is able to get sucked into the inlet. It is possible that the high level blocked the breathing system forcing oil into the inlet tract.

It is also possible that you have a (or a couple) of bad fuel injectors effectively 'flooding' the cylinders and filling the sump with diesel (this is unlikely).

Another possibility is a duff head gasket I suppose.

Start by getting the oil right though.

Let us know as soon as poss.....

Definitely the oil level too high, had this a month ago, a customer changed his own oil then had smoking and engine revving when it shouldn't, he had put 4 litres too much in.

I also had this with my neice's VW Golf gti, her boyfriend filled it up way over the correct level....same symptoms as this.

The rattle you heard was probably the engine knocking its balls off trying to compress the oil in the combustion chambers.

Hope you have no long lasting problems after this event. You were lucky by the sounds of it.

Just keep and eye out for oil leaks over the next few weeks.

Glad it's settled down.

The chap that seriously overfilled his 406 110 HDi drove to the south of France towing a caravan all the way there, without incident, so you should be fine.
