Oil dripping from intercooler

Post by aa410c »

noticed oil dripping onto drive this morning and following a lengthy investigation it looks as though the intercooler rad is damaged. (probably due to a collision with a rabbit a few days ago).
I am more concerned that there is oil in there at all. I understand that it cools the gases that circulate around the turbo but i wouldnot have thought that there would be wet oil in there. having spoken to a friend he said that it could be the turbo seals but another source said to check the breathers. does anyone have any experience of this type of problem. 1996 406 1.9td

The intercooler hose on my HDI has traces of oil there - apparently it's normal.

Oil can weep past yer turbo seals. It's probably to be expected on older tubs. You only need to be concerned if there's a lot. Next time you service it try a thicker oil, or if you're flush get yer turbo whipped out and serviced ^^

It's perfectly normal to have some oil in the intercooler or pipes.

BTW, the air passing through the intercooler is cooled to make it more dense to help give a more effecient burning process.

I didn't think the 1.9 had an intercooler? :?

The 90bhp HDi doesn't have one.

My 90bhp Xantia TD had an intercooler - the 90bhp HDi does not.

There are also the fumes from the crankcase breather to consider, these will contain oil vapour and are routed to be recirculated back through the inlet tract
