2.1TD LX - What fuel additive?

hi all...

I am wondering whether it's worth putting some fuel additive into the car?

I'm about to do a 500 mile round trip which will take up the best part of a tank so I think it'd be worth putting some in.

So, if it's worth it, which one? I normally go for redex but i've seen forte and have heard good things about it.

Any idea's?

Forte is supposed to be the best but it's expensive.

I use Wynns, can't think of what's on the label, but it comes in a small tin the size of a small coke can with a ring pull lid, it costs about 6 quid, it works very well.

I know it's a little expensive but given the age of the engine and the crap I stick in it (budget diesel), I think it could do with it since it's done me so well so far.

Would putting an additive in make the fuel burn quicker whilst it's in the system?

I have used Wynn's in the past with good results (2.1td with 175ish k)

Using cheap diesel (Tescos ect) is not a good idea, it doesn't have the same amount of cleaning agent in it and many have found that you get less MPG from it, where as with BP, ESSO ect fuel you pay more per ltr but the higher MPG will more than ofset the cost.
So £ per mile, cheap fuel dosen't pay.

Unless like me you make your own for 10p a ltr

I know for Turbo'd Petrol cars the higher octane rating is better for the car can potentially give more power, thus not needing to accelerate as hard and inject less fuel due to ignition advance etc.

Does the same happen for the 'Super' diesel?

Im keeping a record of my milage, fill ups average speed, distance travelled etc and will do a few more months worth of Tesco bog standard diesel before trying to Esso/BP or Shell.

Only problem I see if the colder months sapping some MPG's so might not be too fair.

Using Tesco diesel in our cars makes no difference at all.We did 64,000 miles in our 406 at 50 mpg on Tesco diesel.

My Expert van is about the same.

I have found the same to be true.

I was at one point fairly anal about checking my fuel consumption and found that I got no less from supermarket diesel over "better" branded fuels.
The fuel has to reach a certain spec to be sold and this is tightly regulated.
Cheaper fuels may have less detergents in them but modern diesels are so clean running that it's academic.
Older poorly maintained engines will benefit from from posh fuels for a while as they clean the engine but once it's clean the cheap stuff will run fine.

I've never noticed any difference either, (but do seem to get a drop of 2-3 mpg in winter vs summer).
