Clunkidy Clunk Suspension

Post by cheesemaker »

Hello all, hoping to get some pointers from you knowledgeable bunch,
As you might have gathered, a fairly green newbie here. Bought a tidy 406 HDI90 estate on W plate, done 126K, mechanically sound. After a quick once over, I noted that the front N/S CV gaiter need replacing. There are also the usual knocking from the rear suspension going over speed bumps, which I suspect is the drop link that needs replacing

I have lined up the following jobs for the next few weeks

1) replace CV joints both side (got the CV joint kit for £15 each, so thought I just replace them rather than just the gaiter)
2) replace both drop links up front
3) replace both drop links back rear

is there other parts/bushes/stuff that I should be changing whilst I'm at it?
fairly brave DIY mechanic willing to give anything ago as long as it is straight forward....

thanks in advance
cheers

I had that!
It was the bottom bushes on the lower suspension arms-the outer ones. Getting those out was like a scene from the Exorcist
How are your rear tyres wearing?

Jack it up, grab the wheel and give it a good push & pull. You'll see the play if it those ones & hear the clunk.

You may as well change the antirollbar bushes front and rear while you're at it, and the top links on the rear.

I've never done the CV joints but the links and bushes are pretty straight forward :)
