2.1td oil leak

Post by Will406td »

Hello everyone,

just wandered is there a common place that
the 2.1 leaks oil. It's coming from the back of
the engine somewhere.
Any help will be really aprieciated.

With luck you might find the sump gasket's gone, which is an easy job
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

It's coming from the top. But higher than head
head gasket. I'm hoping its rocker cover.

Mine was doing that, it's fairly common apparently. You need to take the top cam cover off to take the cover off, I tried on mine but I couldn't get the cam cover past the engine mounting and I just couldn't be asked to take that off too

Check where the top inlet maifold meats the lower part, there are 4 ruber colers (ones for each cilinder), these sometimes leack oil (blown out by the pressure of the turbo), to check you will have to remove the top maifold and see if there's oil on the outside of the colers.
If it is leacking I'd use some liquid gaskget, blue or red Hylamar should do the trick.

I've just checked the collars and they are leaking
I probably disturbed them when I changed my
glowplugs.

Thank you all, been most helpful

No problem Will, it's all part of the survice.
Mine are leaking as well, but I haven't had chance to seal them up yet.

Every 2.1 I've had has been soaking back there.
Apart from looking crap it doesn't seem to be a worry.
Been living with it for eight years now with no ill effects.

Phew, mine has always leaked, in fact driving her has made her leak less, I just top her up with a litre or so once a month.
406 estate, 2.1TD, I fixed her, then part exchanged her for a Mercedes E300TD Avantgarde Estate.
Hmmmm, straight 6 goodness!

Funny that, my 2.1 uses a bit of oil, less than a liter between services (6000m) but none of the 1.9's I've had have needed topping up at all.
