KNACKERED FLEXIJOINT

Flexi-joint on the exhaust is on the way out get a blast of exhaust fumes when i start it up although not too bad when i'm driving along. Engine managaement light came on they found 3 faults and weren't sure which one caused the light to come on one of the faults was the crankshaft sensor so they've cleared it at no cost which i thought was very good of them! I'm just monitoring it at the moment the engine seems to have a bit of clatter to it maybe that has something to do with the flexijoint problem?

Garage quoted £300 to replace the flexijoint and catalytic convertor. Not including the labour. Took the car somewhere else that does chasis welding and repairs they can weld a brand new flexi joint section in for about £150 + vat. They had a quick look at it and because the flexijoints in an awkward place they will have to take the downpipe off and do it that way rather than welding in situ. I'm quite happy with the price and their work is of a pretty good standard so fingers crossed it all goes okay for monday!

Anyone else had to go down this route? Seems that all the garage wanted to do was take exhaust off and put a new one on even though theres nowt wrong with the catalytic convertor.....£300 + labour = big dent......

Most tyre & exhaust places will only have sections of exhaust.

Ie. Flexi to Cat

Cat

Middle pipe

Back Box.

A specialist or welding or custom exhaust place would be able chop out and weld in just a new flexi section hence the price difference.

Im in the same boat but havent got round to fixing it yet.

I'm hoping to get someone to weld in a new flexi section when I can aford to be without the car for a day or two.

In truth, lots of people will do one for a 90 or 110, but these people are about the only alternative for mine.

Very common fault, connected I think to exess engine movement thanks to another common fault (the rear engine mount).

I bet every single HDi out there of 8 years+ will have the same issue

The engine sounding clattery (I mean noticeably more clattery) can indeed be a crank sensor issue. Mine did this just once in this sort of weather and sounded like it wasn't going to make it through the day in fact it cut out completely and the diagnosis later was conflicting readings from the crank sensor but to be fair it never happened again

Another common reason for the engine light is the throttle position sensor.

The 406 is going in the garage today to get the flexijoint done. Just killing a bit of time in the library on the net. Worked out a bit cheaper doing it this way £150+ vat. The other way worked out to be £300 + labour + vat. The bottom pulley and cambelt and water pump will also be done shortly.

Have a small list of jobs to do now. Anti-roll bar bushes on the rear also need to check the links on the back and the trailing arms that run from underneath the rear door to the hub.

Still not 100% sure what the clatter is on the engine but the engine management light hasn't come back on again. Is a new crankshaft sensor expensive? Had a look in the workshop manual and it doesn't look too hard to fit one?

Also looking for another car so i can take the car off the road for a bit and prepare for the mot and putting it on axle stands....

Just got the 406 back from the garage drives much better now its got a new flexijoint. I could hear a raspy noise coming down the hill and it certainly pulls much better too. I had to take it back after i had it done as the exhaust was vibrating a bit . They tightened a few bolts up and its all ok now. Very pleased i had it done and it only cost £140 cash job lol!!

i ended up just having a new flexijoint welded in didn't see the point of paying out for a whole pipe (flexijoint & cat) at £300 plus vat. If you live in Dorset its well worth going to this garage they are called Tricketts and based at holton heath industrial estate poole. They also do chasis welding classic cars.

Next week its the bottom pulley.......
