1.9td wont run, stuck now

Post by bigblue2 »

after changing the head on my 406 and it actually running fine for couple of months i noticed a small drip of collant coming from underneath , worked out it was coming water pump gasket, overthe weekend i set about doing it, i locked the pump cam and flywheel then removed the wp, fitted new gasket and decided to but a new cam belt on just to be safe, fitted all back together now it wont run
what happens now is i can crank it over for 10 seconds and it will rev then for about 2 seconds and just die even with foot held to the floor, i never touched the fuel system and had all the timming locked and new belt fitted b4 removing the locking pins, it was running sweet before
any ideas would be great as i'm very confused now

Have you knocked one of the sensor plugs? Crankshaft position sensor?

Did it tickover? I would re-check the timing first.

no it just gives a quick rev then dies, wont rev or tick over and will only do its quick rev think after around 10 seconds on the key but dies straight away, the only thing i did wonder regaurding timming was that the pump pulley did move slightly when i removed the pin but wouldn't have thought that colud make any difference if the belt isin place or does it, as said confused now , was running lovely before and thought wp problem just a mornings work

It would save a lot of messing to re-check the timing, see if the pins and bolts all go back in place as they should, one tooth out could make all the difference, once you have checked it at least you'll know it's alright....eliminate any doubt. This is one classic instance why I always mark the pulleys with tipex, at least you have quick reference points.

thanks for all the replies and advice, i finally got chance to check the car out yesterday and it seems like i had the timming one tooth out, how the hell i managed that with the locking pins in i'll never know but somehow i did it ,think that should get me to the top of the muppet class lol
only thing i need to sort out now is why the hell the aux belt sometimes flaps between aircon pump and crank pulley, the belt seems tight enough and only does it from time to time but does make quite a racket when it does

cyclic vibration mate, my combo di used to do it and it made the weirdest noise. It was the alternator bearing on that but may be your crank pulley not well balanced or some other pulley on the aux belt?
