hi, looking to change disc and pads on my 406 estate but a friend told me you need a special bit to remove the caliper bolts. is this true?

You MAY be lucky enough to be able to undo the calliper bolt with an allen key/socket, but in my experience you need an impact driver/wrench to avoid rounding the things. I'd skip that though: as you can see from my howtos below, it's possible (and recommended by me!!!) to leave the things attached:
Pads change: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=6840
Discs change: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=7219
If memory serves, the front callipers need a bolt removing, which is difficult and can snap - get a pair of replacements in before trying the job
