Re: 1999 HDi engine swap - Help required
I don't think they can just assume it's wrecked without doing a compression test, unless it turned over really quickly with obviously no compression. I suppose the followers could damage the camshaft so it might be an idea to remove them first, but I can't see why the camshaft would need to be turning to do a compression test.

The valves need to be closed on the compression stroke, a working camshaft is the only real way to do this, I don't know if there's anything else in place for the valves to spring-close and stay closed?steve_earwig wrote:but I can't see why the camshaft would need to be turning to do a compression test.
In other words you'd pretty much have to 'fix' the engine just to do a compression test, hence why the garage said is was uneconomical on the assumption that the rockers wouldn't be the only problem.

Re: 1999 HDi engine swap - Help required
So my plan to fit the RHY engine from the 306 is still the way to go. Does anyone have a definitive answer as to the question of the two engines being identical? They were both, well the cars were, manufactured in the same year, are the same DW10 90 engines and have the same engine code, RHY, are both Bosch injection and management so I think that they should be identical. I may be completely wrong but I hope not. The gearboxes may well be different so I am going to reuse mine but I would like confirmation that the engines should be a direct swap.
As for parts where is the best place to go for them? I have a GSF close by that I use for some of the parts for my VW and Camberley Auto Factors is just round the corner. Are there any bits that it is best to get directly from Peugeot? My current shopping list is:
Cam belt
Bottom Pulley
Power steering belt
Aircon belt
Followers
Water pump
Do I need anything else or is there anything that I should check as a matter of course?
Many thanks for all of the responses so far,
Jon

Re: 1999 HDi engine swap - Help required
Sorry Jon, they're different part numbers but I can't see what's different comparing individual part numbers. I think you need to do a good compare. I'd think GSF can supply most parts you'll need, apart from the followers (why? I thought you was binning the old lump)
Eh? It's not desmodromic you know, the valve springs hold the valves closed, the cam opens them via the followers. If they're missing the valves stay closedWelly wrote:I don't know if there's anything else in place for the valves to spring-close and stay closed?

Re: 1999 HDi engine swap - Help required
I understood that the followers should be changed with the cam belt. If not that saves me a bit. As for the different part numbers how would I check for small differences? I am guessing that, as they share the same engine code, they will be visually the same. How would I go about identifying differences?

Maybe the cam belt tensioner and idler but not the followers.
406 NEW 0135 FE DIES ENGINE NEW TAG RHY - TURBO DIESEL DW10TD
306 NEW 0135 FG DIES ENGINE NEW TAG RHY - TURBO DIESEL DW10TD (SEE A + B)
The A and B refer to HP injection pipes (and the second lot don't exist
)
There's an different head on earlier 306s! Different injectors, different pipework (ERMETO?) different fuel rail. There's some sort of note about it but it's masses in French
The later head, both blocks, crank, pistons, cam etc. are the same. I think you need to closely examine your head
and compare the pipework.

Oh b00l0cks! Looks like I may have bought a duff one, only time will tell. On the other hand will the differences in fuel supply make any difference to the overall flow? By that I mean will it make it impossible to run the early 306 head on a 406 ECU? They are both Bosch systems, and I am hoping that the early ones were Siemans, or could I just swap over the ECU from the 306 and plug and play?steve_earwig wrote:Maybe the cam belt tensioner and idler but not the followers.

Now that I really don't know how to work out. I looks like the pump was different too so I'm really not sure.

OK, the seller has finally agreed that I have paid him for the new(ish) engine and it will be collected on Mon next week. I have choir practice on Mon so will get a good look on Tues evening. I will take photos and post back with my findings. I have also printed off the "how too" guides and will be studying them over the weekend as well. All fun and games here!
Re: 1999 HDi engine swap - Help required
while you have the box out you might as well change the clutch
Re: 1999 HDi engine swap - Help required
I think that the only difference in the early hdi engines hp pumps was that the early ones didnt have the 3rd piston deactivator (full pressure all the time), they are fully interchangeable though even though you dont have anywhere to plug the 3rd piston deactivator connector into, in fact, some people remove to connector on pumps with it, so that they get full pressure all the time (supposed to improve low end power, but at the expense of a slight economy loss)
Re: 1999 HDi engine swap - Help required
Still waiting to hear if the engine has been collected and then I can check to see if there are any differences.

HI,
As the engine is 'only ' at 200k then its worth saving in my opinion. Mines on the same miles and still works fine and takes the punishment. I DO however ensure that all is well serviced and looked after.
A secondhand head might be worth investigating...or ebaying what's left to recover the money.
(I still have a good nick 1.9 td spare head if anyone wants it btw? ...from a bottom end repair)
Whilst its up on the ramps then the bottom balljoints will be relatively easy to do, especially if you have access to a blowtorch and air chisel as they ARE troublesome to remove. Presumably they're the originals? If so you'll need to change them by now.

For 20 ish quid its worth the investment believe me. A lick of copper grease on the thread upon refitting will help for for
future removal if necessary.
For the record we had to change the engine on a 1.9 td due to the soft conrods/split piston problem and a 306 td engine was employed . All that was needed was to use the 406 turbo & manifolds etc on that engine. All proved fine and the car is still running now 6 years on. The Hdi I imagine should be ok as all the castings are probably the same.
Hope this helps.

Yes I could do that, but it is easier, and I am really that lazy, to simply make sure that this post never dips from the top half of the page!
