All I know is, when the wife's fried up a bunch of chicken wings (her being a merry can) I get a funnel, line it with kitchen towel and strain the old oil through it to remove the BCBs.

On another subject, you know Morrison's sopped flogging that B30 bio-diesel? Certainly here at Southampton anyway, which is a pain cos it was doing my MPG a world of good. Grr.

They stopped the B30 as the green government stopped the duty rebate on the production and it would have ended up costing more than normal pump B5 diesel.

"Is it green?", "yes minister", "Good, tax the f*ck out of it", "yes minister" ....

aye fuel tax is bullshit cos no matter what we run, they will tax it to death anyway. sh*t if they could tax the air we breathe they would. (dont hold your breath on that one either LOL)

Stevie, when you say make it into biodiesel are you referring to adding Lye? Or is there an easier (safer) way to do it? Also I've seen folks say they "got the car used to biodiesel gradually) - how can the car "get used to" something? I had hoped bio was a straight swap for diesel but it seems not. Pity!

Our local fuel taverna says theirs is 7% bio (BP private franchise) but its fapping dear so I use sainsbury when I can. (unfortunately they are 20 miles from my house :( )

All shell diesel now comes with around 7-10% bio ethinol, from ensus at wilton in cleveland as we ship in the wheat and they make around 415 million litres a year, the plant has just started at xmas 09, so look at shell forcourts at they only sell it to shell.

Gonna try pure veg oil when i next need fuel :cheesy:

Yup, biodiesel is veg oil with sodium hydroxide and methanol added, then mixed for a while, the washed to removed the soap, then dried to remove the water, then demethed, then settled, then filtered, then put in your tank.

If you've got a mechanical pump, veg or biodiesel is fine. Watch out though it will pull all the crap out of your fuel tank and clog a couple of filters (means you have a clean fuel sytem though!), it's fine after that though.

He's a nutter then, veg is very thick compared to bio/diesel, it WILL shag the lift pump and it WILL shag his high pressure pump, just a matter of time. Does his saving ofset the cost of replacing both parts? could still be quids in.

All pump diesel is currently min 5% bio diesel, the bio-ethanol is for petrol engines.

Veg is the way forwards, might find yourself getting peckish after a drive though, that's my excuse anyway :cheesy: :cheesy:

I really wish there was a safe cheap oil we could just chuck into the hdi but im not going to fack an injection pump to try it lol, is there any oils that need less prep like rapeseed or peanut or olive or sunflower, or are they all equally too thick?

A HDI needs pump diesel or bio, there aren't any safe veg alternatives i'm afraid.

Shame. When I got the HDi I was hoping to run it on bio / veg oil, like I did the old Citroen XUDs.

Until I read the horror stories, similar to the above comments.

Bloody thing is more like a fussy tuned petrol engine than a clattery old diesel. :(

adamr8965 wrote:Been looking on youtube people add white spirt to loosen the oil, so can use in winter aswell, so just buy from tesco and chuck it straight in the tank. Feels a little weird to chuck cooking oil in the fuel tank. But done some research and diesel engines were desgined to run on cooking oil before normal diesel became readily available.
actually designed to run on peanut oil , but fossil fuel was cheaper at the time they started mass producing diesel engines .

I used to run my 405 with a bosch pump on a combination of kero (out of heating oil tank) & cooking oil ran perfectly untill i went on hols let mate borrow car he ran it dry on oil (had slight oil leak) & it was foooked also ran astra td on cooking oil for ages no probs till wife filled up with unleaded drove from Exeter to Southampton nearly there i gets phone call car made awfull noise then died, new fuel pump later, is this karma or do rev & customs cast spells now drive hdi & dont chance it but if a nice 405 est with bosch pump comes my way i would have no hesitation.

Very interested in trying veg oil in my 97 1.9td and saving a few quid, however I have a couple of questions;
How can I tell which pump I have ? (can't see anything on pump)
Can you mix veg and diesel or is it one or the other ?
How does it effect mpg ? mine is p*ss poor on diesel anyway :(

I've yet to see a 406 that DIDN'T have a Bosch pump.

You can mix them without worrying.

Fuel economy SHOULD be slightly worse due to the slightly lower energy content of veg compared to pump diesel, but i've seen no difference on mine.
