 Why "EXTRAORDINARILY" bad? I let the needle go to the bottom of the "empty" mark before I fill it up (about 40 miles from light switch-on).

I seem to recall people running out of fuel and the ECU and fuel pump having a right hissy fit as a result
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Never run a diesel out of fuel - it's a nice way to wreck it! Oh and it's a biatch getting it running again!

As for the fuel gauge - treat it as more of an estimation in the last quarter. If you do the sums yourself based on average fuel economy and driving style, you can work it out yourself!

Certainly does vary from sender to sender. Led to an embarrassing problem after changing the pump/sender on my 110HDI - the new one gives a lot less warning!

Mine did this yesterday, I ran out as I was on my way to get fuel, the engine management light came on before it coughed and died, and after I put diesel in it was a pig to start and the eml light stayed on for a while afterwards, think its the HDi's way of telling you off :(

Mine usually shows when I have approx. 60-45 miles left according to the computer.

Payday tomorrow, so fill up and then into the cashier with £80. Feels like filling a bus sometimes :cheesy:

£80 !!! bloody hell , no wonder I like my mates bio-diesel @ 60p/litre £30 for 50litres

the 406 has a 70 litre tank, i think thats the case with them all, is 600 miles good (for a 110 hdi), this is plenty of short trips being drove rather uneconomically is that good, and will i get more once the car starts doing the big motorway runs again.
