I was reading about this yesterday on another forum (not 406) and someone who had fitted the GTi-6 box ended up switching back to the diesel in the end.
Someone else commented it the car put the power down better with the diesel box compared to the GTi-6

You're all on about the GTi6 box being fitted, and I'm looking at fitting a 407 diesel 6-speed box. I'm well aware that petrol boxes just won't work on diesels due to the ratio's being out, but you could always check what the final drive ratios are and swap those about to get the box setup perfectly.

GTi6 boxes can be picked up will-nilly for not a lot of money, but try finding a good 407HDi 6 speed box cheap is like finding rocking horse dung!

Couldn't agree more on ratios, but I also don't think a GTI-6 'box could handle the torque, least not for long.....

Great for going down hills, not so clever otherwise. Most petrols just won't have the torque at low revs to pull these ratios.

I can remember back in the day when Escort RS Turbos were commonplace, it was a popular mod to fit the old escort diesel gearbox to them as apparently it was a much stronger box than the standard RST box (albeit without an LSD).

That makes sense, Ford oil burners of that era were not exactly dynamic, (probably half the power / torque of even a 110 HDi), so wouldn't have had real tall gearing anyway. A petrol turbo is closer in torque vs rpm characteristics than it's n/a equivalent to a diesel, too.

Old ford petrols back in the 80s sounded like diesels, as for the issue of gearbox mixing and matching i just generally assume that a petrol box, and diesel box are just for each fuel engine but taking a 6 speed out of a citroen dispatch whats wrong there, its still a hdi 2 litre what could have changed.
And who still makes non turbo diesels for cars these days, theres vws sdi which is terrible and thats all i can think of and its being phased out anyhow
