150mph in a hdi is not possible
Re: What Engine Temp @ -10
That's because you're missing a couple of cylinders. Really, 4 just ain't enough for a twitch let alone a full on ear-to-ear grinFarmerPug wrote:150mph in a hdi is not possible

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Have you driven the 2.2 petrol? It's a nice engine, and fairly leaps into action when you stop the loud pedal.mjb wrote:That's because you're missing a couple of cylinders. Really, 4 just ain't enough for a twitch let alone a full on ear-to-ear grinFarmerPug wrote:150mph in a hdi is not possible
I haven't had the pleasure of driving the V6 (yet); if I were to get one, it'd mostly be for the soundtrack

Re: What Engine Temp @ -10
the mercedes benz 250d sounded very noteful for an old diesel, put your foot down and sounded unusually good. The italians though are the experts in engine sounds, the maserati quatroporte is the best.

Re: What Engine Temp @ -10
now thats a comment only the uninitiated could make a V12 has the power and delivery but the sound is too cluttered there is no definition, no soul, its too many cylinders competing for your ear, at full chat in a race car that would be different, its a howl you will never forget but in your everyday car?FarmerPug wrote:and the v8 is the poor mans v12
I had the option of buying the 750 when i bought my 740, yes more power, yes more torque, yes more, more , more, more, but, no soul you see, it just sounded, well it just sounded like a V12 Im afraid

each to their own, if you want a V12 then its your choice, nobody can say you are wrong they are fine lumps, but for me you cant beat the throb of a V8, the rumble from the 8 cylinders as they increase from idle to about 3200 rpm then the rumble becomes a cacophony of mechanical ecstasy all the way up the rev range, a V8 at 5-6000 rpm is a sexual thing and i dont mind admitting it.
The V8 just has the right mix of sound and performance for me im afraid, it cant be beaten, no matter the benefits of the V12's power and torque the V8 is the one i would choose every time, the V12 is fine in a limousine where the sound proofing is there to allow the passenger to travel in a cocoon of silence and luxury but for a drivers car, well the V8 has no competition.

Re: What Engine Temp @ -10
discopol thats a fine bit of emotive language there, you have sold me the v8, i never heard a v12 i just assumed they sounded that bit better because of more cylnders.
But alfas v6 sounds as good as it gets, unless you get a maserati v8. And all small petrol cars with big exhausts dont even come close.

Re: What Engine Temp @ -10
Cheers Farmer,
the V8 is my favorite engine, to be precise the M62 4.4l BMW lump post nikoseal issues from 1997-8 onwards, it still lives on in some guises now.
my next Chelsea Tractor will hopefully be a P38 Range Rover with the same lump but slightly higher capacity at 4.6l if i can find one that isnt a confused electrical mess, sadly the RR P38 was a fine mechanical beasty let down by poor electronics and silly airbag suspension, but heres hoping on my next car buying mission back to the UK the snow has gone and the recession deepened (sorry chaps) so there are a few more about at reasonable prices, after all who can justify a 4.6l at nearly 1.50 a litre for fuel and stupidly high insurance?
If you happen to know anybody who wants rid of one let me know, i have cash burning bloody big hole in my wallet and if the wife finds out she will spend that too
I reckon my other half must have helped the UK economy out a fair whack when we were over at xmas she certainly drained my bank account

Re: What Engine Temp @ -10
No offence but i dont like that version of range rover, for me the range rover will always be the range rover classic, it just looks more rugged and suitable off road than the p38. I cant comment on the amount of electronics it had but id say much less than any newer rangies.

Re: What Engine Temp @ -10
I agree completely on the classic being a far superior motor, but try finding a decent one that is will drive straight across europe without too much hassle and you will have to part with far too much cash, the Disco i have now is essentially a RR classic chassis and running gear underneath with a new body shape on top, so i have the off road capabilities just not the looks,
the reason im after a P38 is it will be my road car with decent abilities for the rough stuff, im keeping the Disco and making it a project for the muddy stuff there are plenty of trans-poland rallies every year and i fancy entering one next year if i can get another road going 4x4 so i can start work on the Disco.
so the P38 is a compromise, new enough that it still looks shiny and respectable for work, big enough that i dont look and feel cramped and i get to ferry the family around in leather clad V8 comfort, plus i am positive the wife wouldnt be happy if i bought another 16 year+ car home, so an early 2001-2-3 ish car should keep her happy and it would still be a Landy of sorts.
