yes this is possible its called "hydraulic lock" and can also happen to engineswhen you "roll" a car since the oil will drain into the head and as you turn it over down into the bores.

Sorry for resurrecting this old thread, but on my car the air filter housing has a little spring loaded outward-opening door on the front near the top. If I were to wedge this open would I be able to drive through aforementioned 6" of water (obviously closing it afterwards as it bypasses the filter)?

you should be able to since air is easier to suck than water, (put a straw in a cup of water then cut a hole in a straw above the water line and try and get some drink out the cupusing the sraw :P)
although i would not reccomend such action

Quick fix:

Remove your air filter box and drill some holes in the bottom section of it, about 5 either side and 3 in the front... 12mm drill bit at least!

Then just put it back, and you'll be ok if you run into a ford !

Hi,

Can you buy an air filter housing and all that will stop this (sort of like a KN - But not for performance reasons)

Regards,

Andy

Off-road vehicles use a snorkle system where the air intake is through a pipe running up the A pillar to the roofline, would look a bit strange on a 406 though!!!

No you cant, as Davva said 4x4's use a snorkle set up, but your car doesn't have a vent in the wing for you to pass the tube through... I can always cut one out for you with my nibbler ! ! lol
