Re: CHEAP ENGINE OIL 10W40
Yes, there is the rumour that using engine flush on an old engine might make it leak, as they say all the crud is what's sealing it up. Not something I buy into. Indeed, I flushed the current old heap when I got it at 160k. Loads of crap came out, and it drives a bit better. No leaks

Re: CHEAP ENGINE OIL 10W40
Well, I've no wish to have an argument with anyone, but in my considerable experience I have never come across a car engine that developed oil leaks by changing to a different type of oil.
Oil leaks are usually caused by faulty/old, hardened oil seals/gaskets/oil pressure switches etc.
An oil leak is an oil leak no matter whether synthetic or semi synthetic, how thick or thin or old or new the oil might be.
If you think about it to repair an oil leak all you need do is put a thicker oil in or semi synthetic if using fully synthetic and you've stopped it, doesn't sound right does it?

as of engine flush, ive flushed every car ive had before adding new oil never had a problem.
iuse the cheapo Morrisons oil the type with yellow label,

does a good job at cleaning engines that stuff so ive found,
it also says on the label its good for flushing engines, weird that tho as its sold as Engine oil

Who's arguing? Sam just repeated one of those rumours that we've all heard versions of and you told him it wasn't so. I've had my versions floating around my head since I was a teenager in a "well, it could...perhaps...maybe...but..." kind of way and seeing one mentioned I thought I'd post about them so I can finally lay them to rest. There's probably more of these "a bloke down the pub told me..." rumours floating about, I can only think of one off the top of my head: VWs are reliable...steve_earwig wrote:![]()

And that's why we're lucky to have you here!my considerable experience

So, about this wart cure...

Re: CHEAP ENGINE OIL 10W40
Hi everyone
Just a quick update on the Asda 10W40 semi-synth engine oil i bought recently. Finally got round to doing an oil and filter change today and i have to say the asda engine oil gets the thumbs up from me. I took the car for a drive after doing the job and the engine sounds exactly the same as before. Engine still has a slight tappety sound but its no worse than before can't expect it to sound perfect with 200k on the clock.
I think i will be going back to asdas to get some more 10W40 still on offer at 10 quid for 5 litres on rollback reduced from 16 quid. Also Redex diesel and petrol injector cleaner is £2 for a bottle just now. This oil change worked out a lot cheaper at £13.94 in total. Cost £27.93 last time.

Re: CHEAP ENGINE OIL 10W40
I went from 10w40 to 5w40 Fully synth in my 1.9TD and it leaked like hell.
Same with the Focus went from 5w30 Semi to 5w30 Fully synth and it leaked too!
Over time dirt builts up in different parts of the engine. Synthetic oils clean better than semi, much better.
Chances are theres a few places where oil should be leaking but isn't because of the dirt build up.
You wash all this away and it will leak!
