Again,is your starter turning-over quick enough? My new starter starts engine I'd say,in less than 1.5 seconds,& thats at below freezing

The new glow plugs made no improvement, and starting seemed to be getting progressively worse even though it's getting warmer again.
I got the starter motor reconditioned yesterday and it's much better now - it was 4 degrees this morning and it started within 1 or 2 seconds. It's cranking a lot faster now - sounds a lot more normal

I think I spoke too soon - it still sounds like it's cranking a bit faster than before but it's back to 2-3 attempts at starting and a cloud of white smoke nearly every morning
Time for a new starter altogether then? I was quoted about €400 for an OEM replacement! Do I have any good alternatives? It's some Mitsubishi yoke, I forget the part number...
