Interesting pictures, thanks for that. I think we can safely say it was a knackered, buggered, time served, worn out condenser.

Air Con man came this morning. Nitrogen pressure tested (150psi) and held it ok. Two shots of oil/dye due age of car and no AC service history. Regassed (740g) and compressor would not kick in. I mentioned other peoples experience of forcing the compressor to start. Did this to prove compressor works so turned out to be a blown fuse in the engine bay fuse box. A 10A fuse that he replaced and hey presto - AC. Compressor has been idle for sometime but hopefully over a bit of use it will free up.

Total job £93.60(inc tax) so new condenser and regas/test about £130.

Nice one, that's a £300.00 job usually.

It will be worth noting that the compressor will not run below 0 deg C ambient as a safeguard (the refrigerant oil cannot vaporise at low temps so puts the compressor at risk).

The current weather might make you think it's not working when it is :|
