I hope the buyer gets a decent car, then de-faps, de-EGRs and throws a remap on it and thoroughly enjoys it.... :cheesy:

The £30 was Monopoly money..

I have noticed that some of you have 6 speed manual gearbox in your 406.
What model did you get it from, was it strait transplant, lot of work?

Hi, only the 6 speed from a C5 with the same 2.2Hdi engine will fit - its a 20MB04 I think, or 20MB02...

There are a couple of little things to change over but its well documented on here.

20MB04 is the one :) Haven't seen one on eBay (or anywhere else) in quite a while though.

My reason for having a 6th gear is to lower rpm at high speed.

At 2000 RPM in 5th gear, speed is about 55-56 MPH.
Gearbox; BE4 L,
Ratio; CP 19 X 77

In 6th gear, what is the RPM, speed being the same?

What engine do you have? Sounds like an HDi 90 to me, I know the 110 gearbox in 5th is 31mph/1000rpm, so at 2000rpm you should be doing 62mph real speed (so 65 or so on speedo), however I believe the 90's are geared a bit lower. If you do have a 2.0HDi 90 I don't believe a 6 speed box can be retrofitted.

Thanks to everyone for the replies, most kind of you all.

Yes, my engine is 90HP RHY (DW10TD).

I thought that my 90HP DW10TD and 110 HP DW10ATED has the same block? Not sure of the 2.2 litre block.

Will do some more search to figure out the difference between engine blocks, mounting etc.

Maybe drive shafts are different from what I have, even chassis mount. Now that would complicate it further.

Replacing engine is not what I'd like to do as it is in very good condition.

90. 110 and 2.2 engines all have the same block, (2.2 is longer stroke/same bore).
All have different flywheels and clutch housings - 90's typically have a BE3 or BE4 series gearbox.
110's and 2.2's both have an ML series gearbox, but they have different input flanges to suit the specific engine.
You may be able to fit the 6-speed BE series gearbox from a 306 GTi-6, but I suspect the final drive ratio would not suit a diesel.
I don't believe it would be straightforward to fit an ML6C to a 90 and I think neither 2.0 engine would have enough torque to pull 35mph/1000 RPM in 6th.

Would it pull 55 MPH at 1500 RPM?

Thanks.

A remapped 110 would be ok with a 6 speed box I reckon, strictly for cruising though as the torque won't be enough to overtake others on the motorway unless on a flat ground in 6th, so a downshift to 5th may be necessary. My 110 in 5th is still very spritely though, from about 75mph onwards it will pull very nicely to around 120mph where it starts to tail off (my box is a ML5T, 31mph/1000rpm so 120mph is 3900rpm).

I think a 6 speed may be optimistic for a 90, they're slow even on the standard boxes which are geared higher than both the 2.2 and 2.0 110hp. With a remap to 115hp it would cruise ok I reckon but expect to downshift for hills. I'd fit a 110 box if you can as this will reduce the cruising RPM while still retaining some grunt if an overtake is necessary. With this box you'd be at a calculated 1770rpm in 5th gear for 55mph.

So this could mean that I will use more fuel that I currently do, and stress the engine whiles driving.
I never thought of that.
What I have is adequate so I will keep it as it is.

Thank you - much appreciated.

It is really good to have a forum where such knowledge flourish.
