I think I'd be checking that first. My knowledge of these things is a little antiquated now but you used to be able to tell when the thermostat opened because the top hose suddenly got hot. I can't imagine these'd be any different but...

Do you want to borrow my rakia thermometer?
I was wishing I had a thermometer an hour into warming it up and the hose was still cold.... I too thought any minute now that hose will warm up but wern't sure if I was right.
Am I just going to create air by taking it out again or will I only lose a little coolant?

Not to worried about replacing coolant it's creating air again.

I can create wind... You'll be opening up the system so I reckon it's impossible to avoid air getting in, so you'll need to bleed it again yes. All that needs is a bit of patience, while I'd admit it's a nuisance I thought you'd be more worried about loosing your new coolant.
For the sake of another fivers worth of coolant I just want to get the bloody thing right... Just popped it in a jug of freshly boiled water and it didn't budge so phoned my LMF he's ordered another and is happy to replace but seems to think the kettle trick might not work anymore so i'll get him to test it before i leave his shop.
If he's right and the kettle trick don't work how am I going to know if i get another dodgy one or not?

You should pop it in a saucepan and boil it on the cooker, it should open just before the water starts to boil. I can't see why the kettle thing doesn't work tho, maybe the mass of the thermostat cools it down too quick
I just tried that and it opened but it had to be bubbling away like a good un... So that works what now? Matches?

A stat will open at around 82deg C. I think I'd rather see it warm up and open with the water rather than drop it straight in.
I'm struggling to get my head around what's going on with your cooling system.
Me too mate I'ts really fecking me off now I can't go anywhere further than 40 to 50 miles and my Nan wants me to take her to Doncaster early Feb (I don't let her down ever)
Only thing i can do now is pop the new thermostat in tomorrow morning and maybe try to make an air tight bottle to go in the header tank and run it til the top hose gets hot.

I blasted the hose pipe through it... It was a tad colder at the bottom yesterday not sure if that's enough for concern.
Do you take sugar?

Toasty mate... Not to good when running it with a doctored thermostat though.

Put new thermostat in yesterday jacked the drivers side right up and rigged a bottle to go in the expansion tank and revved the car on and off for over two hours... Fan didn't kick in to my knowledge... Here's a video of what it's still doing after those two hours.
Jaspers concern was the fan not kicking in but when i told him it does this from cold he said sounds like the HG..... Off I go back to the garage that "Allegedly" done the sniff test.
