my moneys still on the knock sensor
as you have almost every possible spare, i would change one thing and then go for a drive, and continue untill the problem is resolved, this garage sounds like a right clown though, if it was the tdc it just wouldnt run, and you cant just come up with 'oh it maybe the ecu aswell' this guy clearly aint got a clue

OK Silly question, but when the car is cold it runs fine.... 6.5k no probs.... but when warm.. thats when the problems start ! :(

It may well be an intermittent fault in the sensor that only crops up when it's been running for a while.
I only say this from past experience with dodgy sensors :?

Ok, I don't know how sophisticated the 406 ecu program is, but most modern cars run in open loop during cold-start and only click over to the sensor monitoring closed-loop once they approach operating temp, so that would definitely point to a sensor fault.

With my last car I was messing about with a piggy-back ecu in relation to the crank-angle sensor and raised a fault code in the factory ecu that made the car splutter and cough above 3k rpm that wouldn't go away until I'd cleared the code (fortunately it was just in software and I hadn't actually killed the sensor).

FIXED....

and it didn't need a new sensor, although I put one on because I paid for it and its shiny and new lol

The sensor socket was full of coolant...... the thermo stat cover was leaking / spraying coolant all over the place whilst I was driving.... so I've just been to get a new seal, as the cover is in perfect condition ! :D

So in about an hour when the engine / coolant had cooled down, I will replace the seal and refill / bleed the coolant ! w00t w00t
