I haven't heard that before! - all I know is my car is much better since cleaning the thing

they are very fragile items, i have seen them fail where the airflow has been enough to snap the wires inside it
the way the self clean is, after you have switched off, the element is heated with 12v instead of 4.9v for a few minutes to burn off any residue
