mjb, I think ur diagnosis of the stat being stuck open is what is causing my heating problem. Is it a hard job to replace on the 1.9td? wheres it @? Stupid haynes only shows the 2.1 if i can rememeber right. Ive an idea but i dont want to go poking around where i shouldnt. aha

Being -7deg C this morning my car refused to rise above 80 deg and spent most of it's time around the 70 deg mark! I think the oil sump temperature has a lot to do with this in these conditions i.e. the oil acts like a coolant inside the engine for the first hour or so.

My missus' Astra temp was all over the shop - rising when stationary then falling again when moving, generally taking an age to warm up etc. and usally hovvering around the 70 mark a new thermostat has sorted it out and it now rises steadily to 85 on the gauge and stays there (not that she ever noticed anything was wrong)

The Astra's 'only' 5 years old with 60K :|

First thing I did was change the stat on my HDi within a week of buying it 8) (I say "I" changed it, well.....)
