Re: lumpy idling and power loss 2.0 Petrol
Hello D doherty406,I fixed the speedo fault not by replacing any sender units ,but by resoldering dry joints where the gauge unit is soldered onto the PCB in the instrument housing in the dash. I ascertained that this was the fault by banging the top of the instrument housing with my fist when the fault was present. This would instantly stop the needle mis-behaving,which pointed to a bad connection in the instrument housing itself. Carefullly unclip the black instument facia on the dash, make sure you dont snap any of the securing clips. Then undo the Torx screws holding the instrument housing in place.Carefully pull the housing towards you a little and diconnect the 2 electrical plugs at the back. This is done by releasing the locking mechanism on the connection block. I did not bother dis-connecting the battery, just dont turn on the ignition while doing this.Once the unit is out of the car, undo the torx retaining screws and unclip the 2 halves being very carefull when you unclip the thin flexible PCB connecting strip. With a strong magnifying eyepiece, check for dry joints where the gauge is soldered to the PCB. Re-solder all 4 pins to be on safe side then re-assemble being very carefull not to tear the flexible strip. The strip is secured by a strong spring, and make sure all the copper conductors in the strip are aligned properly with the PCB connector. This cured my jumpy needle and saved me £500+. If you tell me how,i will put in an "how to fix" bit in the relevant area.

ah thats great help! im sure theres a good few on here that will make good use of this info. Ive had the panel out before to look at it so that should be staright forward enough, and I know a man that fixs music equipment like amps etc, so hes a dab hand with the soldering iron.
il update you with how i get on. As for the 'how to' You need a moderator to put it in the 'knowledge base articles' section. So maybe send them a message with a link to this or they might just come across it and move it themselfs. Oh I just thought, il take photos when im doin it and pass them on to you, always handy in a how to.
thanks again
