Quite possibly stuck partially open.
You'll have to get a blanking plate in to make certain it's disabled.

Re: Soot in engine?
What a pain in the backside those bolts are that hold the EGR! Took me an hour to get to it/undo it. There wasn't really that much crap inside the EGR valve to be honest and it was closed already. So whatever I've done down (removed it/blocked it) probably won't make a difference. But I have less crap in the engine now! On the other side, where the pipe goes into this water cooler thing there was a loooot of soot mixed with oil from the intercooler - nice. Blocked that end as well.
Will go for a drive later and see what happens.

Re: Soot in engine?
Massive difference this morning when it was a bit nippy.
Normally, the car is a complete b1tch until it's warmed up: really down on power, and really difficult to drive. Guess what? Gone!
What is the ECU programmed to do to warm up the car? Obviously the EGR is open, but does it alter the fuelling or anything else?
