HI,

I blanked off the solenoid which is the central one of the 3 that supplies the egr valve.
Having read some of the problems that some guys on here, and other forums, have had with egr systems
made me think that they're just not worth it. Most manufacturers systems have at some time or other
have caused nothing but problems in cars driveability, particularly Mondeo diesels, with major smoking etc.
My previous D8 td suffered fopr a spell doing this and a problem was solved along with the fast idle problems that occurred.
As I spend most of my time at low revs, low gears and part throttle conditions then the egr valve is, for me, no good!
It really does help driveability and smoothness and gives a little but noticeable improvement in low end power as more oxygen is getting into the engine..not exhaust fumes.

Green is substitute pipe..blanked.
Blue arrow is original solenoid pipe to egr supply. This can be reconnected at any time.
Red to blank off the solenoid and ensure vacuum stability for the other needs of the system.

The trick is to ensure in all cases that you keep the system 'vacuum tight' as the supply of this serves thing like brake servoes..and in our case the turbo wastegate actuator which is where I believe/hope the issues that were having originate from.

Has this stopped the hissing/blowing noise on accelleration?

HI,
None whatsoever apart from helping the smoothness and low end power.

I think ill blank off my EGR later then and see how I get on as most of my driving is stop start traffic and rarly reach 40mph!

I've owned 2-3 turbos cars, although this is my first diesel.

Surely the Turbo should not be making this noise even if the seals are shot? It would just burn oil etc.

Am I correct?

Im thinking more along the lines of a boost leak?

Since mine is a 90HDi with no intercooler, in true Jeremy Clarkson style 'HOW HARD CAN IT BE' to find a split hose?

Im not familar with this engine so does anyone have a diagram of how the boost system works including the vacuum operated wastegate?

Right, tonight after stopping I popped the bonnet had a listen.

I could hear the high/low pitched buz/whine.

Taps 1 of the 2 solenoids and the noise interupted/changed.

Now, without sounding stupid (or suicidal)

Can I disconnect one or both of these solenoids and drive to see which one is making the noise?

Or can I swap them around to test?

It 'sounded' like solenoids could have been emitting a noise, wonder if replacing them with new ones would fix this elusive problem.

I could also 'swap' the ones on my misses car (Assuming its plug and play?) and see if that resolves it so that would confirm its the solenoid and not the tubing/piping

I've read that you can swap them around to prove a point, but the egr control valve is a different part no. (1628 HC), to the other two, (1628 LQ) so not sure :?

Cheers,

When the engine is running, I can nearly depress the brake pedal to the floor. so maybe it might not be the the valves? (What do pug call then?) but the vacuum pump maybe and the valves are making noise because the pump is not sealing and sucking/blowing air through the valves?

Im stabbing in the dark tbh

Well, my car is now sounding throaty and it sounds like the flexible section of the exhaust is blowing.

Im kinda guessing here but I think the hissing noise was the flexi leaking exhaust gasses (More apprarant when on boost) so made the hissing sound.

Just gotta wait till after xmas now and take it to a garage so I can see where its broken and look into getting a replacement section

If you do replace the flexi, let me know how and how much :)

CJ, there is only Longlife round here who do flexi pipes as far as im aware, Infinity Exhausts in Yate are custom but not sure if they do flexi pipes.

Not sure if I can be bothered myself to jack it up and check myself so will play dumb at a tyre exhaust place and get them to put it on their 4 post ramps and have a look myself. Its deffo up front so im guessing the flexi pipe.

Wont be till Jan now though as im busy over xmas/new year

Its not too loud but sounds like a tractor & is perfect timing, not!

I need the bottom mount doing too, which has probably caused this to happen anyway :(
