406 2,1 Turbo Engine out to change ????

Post by Jay1980 »

Hi there.. I was coming back today and loads of smoke came out of exhaust pipe and car decided to go crazy... I called the AA out and they said the Turbo was U/s and the car was running on its own oil ??? engine oil i guess he ment. My mate who is a wanna be macanic came over and un did a pipe from the turbo and it was filled with oil... The problem we have is taking the turbo off we have now got a brand new in the packet turbo but the company we brought it from said we need to remove the whole engine and it can not be changed in the car... is this true... Must admit we have not attemped to remove it as really not sure on what to do... Please could someone who has some idea is it possible to change the turbo without taking the engine out... or pulling it forward or are we living in some dream land lol...... as we have been told from main dealer today lol....

I *think* someone's done it by being brutal with the engine but AFAIK it's a barsteward and removing the engine is easier. May as well change the timing belt and clutch while it's out (depending on their age and/or finances of course)

Thats the annoying part... the clutch has just been done and went in for full service and has cam belt down etc etc.. so not impressed to say the least...

im in process at moment of striping a 2.0 turbo exec engine out and belive me its an absoloute barstuard , there are 4 bolts holding the actual turbo onto the exhaust manifold and i literaly fail to see how even peugeot fitted them lol , we have removed the exhaust manifold from the head and took head of and then removed the exhaust manifold from the turbo , there is also a massive bracket holding the turbo to the block , but the number 1 problem we had are the 2 bolts holding the exhaust downpipe onto the turbo , there spring loaded bolts and there some mad size like 5/8ths andother end of bolt is 10 mm , problem being the 5/8th end is against the turbo side and there is no way possible to get a socket on it ya need a ring spanner and as ya can guess it rounds off , in the end i removed the exhaust manifold and the head to get at the turbo and were not being nice as its all comming out to sell on .

personaly i think if ya struggle like a barstuard and remove drivers side engine mounts and struggle with ratchet ring spanners as we did it would be possible to remove the exhaust manifold from the head and the turbo , get an angle grinder in and cut the 2 bolts holding the downpipe to turbo and have a supply of spline drives to hand for the bracket holding the turbo to the block ( i snapped 2 ) and still didnt get bracket off turbo , ended up unbolting bracket from block , there t40 spline drives and found most of the bolts where this size , its not going to be an easy job belive me but i think ide have a go at manifold removal before pulling engine out , good luck and keep us posted on how ya go .
