If I dont use it I will have to bin it!!

Post by DiscoPol »

Hi all,

as you may or may not know Im off to live abroad soon and when i was cleaning the garage out i found a brand new bottle of Molyslip gearbox additive, now i have vague recollections of buying this a few years ago when i had a very dog eared 525 with the intention of sticking it in the box.

Well it would be rude not to use it as if i dont i will only bin it so quick question, is the easiest way to get this in the box through the reversing light switch i have heard so much about, or is that a D8 thing.

Going to give the pug a service before setting off as its a good 1300 mile drive so may as well throw this in as well, mines a 2000 W 90 HDI , already done about 135000 miles so will have a look at the gear oil when i take some out to top up with molyslip, if its looking nasty i will drop the oil and flush out but if not

(was told it was done only 10k ago when i bought it but i never believe anything i dont see with my own eyes)
would like to just top up with the molyslip.

cheers guys any advice on this would be good, but remember i have hands like a mountain gorilla so no fiddly stuff please.

Likewise with regards to the hands LOL.
Gonna change my gearbox oil too when I get a decent day, so will keep my eyes on this thread too.

How good is this additive in gearboxes? Im assuming that it may quieten down certain gearbox noises within reason, and certainly wouldnt do no harm?

Id also be interested in how easy it is to drop and change the gearbox oil on a d9 hdi 90......

It just goes in the reverse light switch hole. Nice and easy, but you should really either drain the oil and refill with new stuff less the size of the Molyslip bottle, or remove some oil with a syringe and some tubing, otherwise you could be damaging your gearbox by over-filling it. This is especially crucial on auto boxes

I was wondering if it would be the same, on the parts diagram the reversing light switch goes in almost horizontally :? Still, in the box is in the box.

Does the additive have a shelf life?

The 406 gearbox is a tough old brute and may well be happier left alone? :|

I'm not a fan of additives really, more of a 'regular fluid change' kinda guy

Reminds me of the guy who slopped in a bottle of Slick 50 whilst changing the oil on his V8 Rover........popped it away in the garage for the night......next morning.... *BANG* bye bye engine (Slick 50 dropped to the sump in a big cold gloopy lump blocking the oil pick up).

I'd think the only danger would be the molybdenum settling to the bottom (shake bottle before use).

I wasn't a fan either but it improved the gearchange on my D8 no end. I'm still not convinced by Slick 50 etc. though.

Interesting.

Even more editing: Some interesting reading there, after wading through that and some of the links at the bottom my conclusion is, unless you're experiencing some gearchange problems like what I was, DON'T BOTHER. :|

That's what I mean, he'd have to add the stuff and then do a bluddy good run and get it all nice and hot (difficult at 0 deg.C) to make sure it mixes properly :| I'd be worried that, by adding the stuff, it may cause an unnecessary problem on an upcoming (very important) journey.

Seems to be a theme with me at the moment, I even stopped Highlander from buying some leather seats last week :supafrisk:

Anyone else want any 'advice' ?

Which house should we try to sell?
When is the best time to start painting?
What should I do about my TDM's monoshock?
What sort of front wall should I have built at my house and who is reliable enough to build it?
What should I do about the mud between the garden and the firestation carpark here: pave, concrete, tarmac or leave it?
Is it worth putting extra drainage here, bearing in mind the 2" topsoil and the rubble under it?
What should we plant in the garden this year?
If I grow spuds again should I spray them for Colorados or just keep squishing the feckers, bearing in mind last year's disappointment?
When should I paint the trunks of the fruit trees with bug stuff?
Should I buy a new computer before this one goes bang?
What should I get my wife for her ahemieth birthday?
What should I do about the disintegrating roof on the shed?
How do I stop the r/h gate post here moving without not having a gate for a while?
Will the pound ever recover?
Should I see about getting a job?
