Black smoke and power loss

406 HDI estate (122,000 miles) Turning into my road last night there was a loud 'crack' almost like a rifle shot and there seemed to be loss of power. Nothing obvious under the bonnet and engine runs and tick over fine (no warning lights). When I try to accelerate there is no 'go' in it and feels like the car is being choked? When I rev hard or long and steady I am getting clouds of black smoke? I'm thinking the 'cat' may have collapsed?
Does anyone have any ideas on this - Thanks

If yours is one with an intercooler, I would be looking for a broken or split rubber intercooler pipe or broken intercooler, well, the first thing I would check anyway.

I'll second jasper's remarks, I had 3 seperet pipes go on my old 806 110 hdi, all with the some symtoms as your's.
Not a bad job to do but can be ££££ if you have to go to main stealers, Peugeot wonted £95 + vat for one of them but I found one in the scrappy for £10 :D
Look for oil thats been sprayed out is normaly a good giveaway.

Hi Guys, thanks for the tip, it was the pipe just as you suggested and yes it did cost pounds! (£53 from main stealers!). Fitted it tonight and seems to be back to normal.
I've had a look but can't find anything but the main dealers as suppliers - anyone know wherew you can get these pipes cheaper?
