Hi I have a 2.0 90bhp hdi, The gear stick shakes on acceleration, more noticable in 4th gear, and I do get a slight vibration through he car aswell. I've changed the bottom mount and the clutch, but was virbrating befor that, I can't get any noticable movment from the drive shafts, and there is no noise from going round corners from the ithere, and the gear box is quite, I've spoke to a local pug dealer, to no avail, please help, its doing my head in.
Cheers Paul

If its anything like mine or the wifes car...
The problem will probably be the lower engine mount (Torque restriction to stop backwards and forwards twisting action of the engine) which has split thus allowing more than desired movement, this then puts strain on the Gearbox mount as its flexing more.
Re 4th gear. Probably because your already moving and with the torque of the diesel its twisting the engine and putting more stress/movement/vibratin through the linkages into the gearknob.
Since you have replaced the bottom mount (Assuming its not split again?) then its probably the top left (as you stand in front of the engine) or the gearbox mount?

Cheers for the response's, will check the gearbox top mount and see if it's worn, it didn't seem to be worn when I did the clutch at the same time as the bottom mount. Will keep you all posted. But makes a McDonalds milkshke even thicker, whitch is a bonuse!

Replaced the gerabox mount, and its still f-ing shaking, I'll have a look at the driver side and see if the new bottom mount has split in less than 2000 miles, then its onto the drive sgafts, wish i could find the problem

Right this is getting rediculouse, I've now put a new bottom mount on, just to be sure, the drive shafts have been checked by a drive shaft repair company, the driver side engine mount is sound, I now feel the car shake slightly, up to 40-45 mph, in any gear, I have run the car on jacks up to 80 mph with no vibration, so this is load induced vibration! Spoken to several pug dealers who have never come across this problem, I'm looking at changing the wish bone front bushes for polly ones and the ball joints, but U cant get any play in any of the bushes at the front. The vibration stops as soon as I come of the power. CAN ANY ONE HELP PLEASE. I love mu 406 estate, its nearly 200k, and once this is sorted its getting lots of new parts to stiffen up the handling, and pos a 2.2hdi upgrade, so want to keep going.
Cheers Paul

Have you checked your tyres?
You could have an out of shape rear tyre, that would give you a vibration through the car, if it was a front tyre the steering wheel would vibrate.

Easy way to test wheel issues would be to dip the clutch when it's vibrating

just looked at the post, vibration whist accelerating, and looks like diff bearings, so get another gear box and see how I go, god i hope this sorts it, I know the underside of my car perfectly, and am a dab hand at taking the drive shafts off and back on, he he

I hardly think that diff bearings will make the gearstick rattle. I would be amazed if this was the case.

I'm not convinced either but as the 90 has a BE4R with a rod gearchange then any vibration of the engine/transmission will be transmitted by the rod to the gear stick. So maybe if the output shafts can move at the inner end, loading them up might mean they move off centre and create vibrations.

I've found something here for you which points to the inner CV joints.

The drive shafts have been checked in the past couple of weeks by a shaft repair company, and they are fine, so the only thing left is possibly somthing internal in the gear boxas its speed and load related, there is no movment in any of the bushes on the front end, so just sourcing a replacement box, does any one know if its a easyish job to replace the diff bearings, done plenty of jap gear box rebuilds, but never touched a french one, and want to put my origanal box back on, I know what condition its in, if that makes sense to any one.
