New HDI - few issues

Well I picked up the HDi today. the 110 exec estate. 167K - next to no history.

cambelt kit, water pump, pulley, are first jobs on the list

Now - something isn't right.

When I first started driving it... it seemed to almost "misfire" or certainly struggle, and maybe vibrate a bit, when under load. When idling, it would occasionally miss a beat - just noticable.

I feel that performance is just not what it should be. My old TD was definately better than this !!

MPG was 48, on a 60mph motorway trip - I'd expect a touch more? This was calculated by re-filling and not the computer.

I am unsure if there is a very small diesel leak. The rocker cover, on the top/front, cambelt side, seems a bit wet and the small amount of fluid collecting there was too thin to be oil

The injectors all look bone dry though so do the leakoff pipes, can't see where it may be coming from?

In a nutshell I am disappointed, the car is a slug and the performance 0-60 almost feels dangerous!

I know I'm used to a 200bhp V6 omega, so I expect it to not be neck snapping.... however - it just isn't good enough.

Aside of a full engine service, any ideas where to start?

The engine management light works - but is not on when the car is running.

My dash bulbs are also nearly all blown - are they easy to change?

The car was £700, W plated, with nice leather and in good nick otherwise, so don't mind having to do a few jobs, just don't know a lot about the HDi.

Cheers chaps.

Just to add, have checked air hoses, vacc pipes etc visually as best as I could, although I couldn't get under the car at the time.

Another point to note, when you rev it, there is an almighty whine like a jet engine, and when the revs drop, it sounds like the "jet engine" is powering down. I'm struggling to attribute it to anything - there is a whine/noise which sounds almost like the cambelt has too much tension...

If it sounds like a jet engine, my first point of call would be to check all connections to the turbo

The MAF seems to be a good place to look for a misfire - if it's grubby give it a clean with carb cleaner. Might be useful to see if it has any faults stored. Does it smoke?

Also have a check around the intercooler for any oil .. it could indicate a split and so the engine will be loosing boost etc

Ahhh - the engine management light came on today!

How do I read the codes - can I buy a device that will read/reset?

You can buy a reader and software but for some reason it's wallet-emptyingly expensive to just use once. Best of stumbling into your local Pug dealer or local garage with the right gear.

I want to buy one... on the basis I always DIY jobs, will save cash in the long run

Any suggestions for a good code reader, or a lead off ebay?

Is the 2000 HDi ODBII compliant, I know it doesn't have a 16pin plug, so I'll need an adaptor right?

EML is still on, car idles lumpy for a long time when cold, and there is a bit of a whining noise in the high pressure pump area when it's cold too (silent when warm)

Turbo is working - but it's not as powerful as it should be, and acceleration is a bit "rough"

Advice please chaps? :cheesy:
