Fault Code Reader

Hi all
My early (2000) HDi is not performing well and the EML has come on.
I need to read the codes - can anyone suggest a good source of a code reader?
Preferably one that shows live data, but that's not quite so important. I have no idea about these engines , I'm out of my depth
