Hi all, just wondering if anyone knows if a power steering pump from a petrol model would be the same as on a diesel of the same year ? D8's in particular

when turning the wheel when my engine is cold it sounds like someone is murdering a pig under the bonnet ! (by that I mean a loud sqealing noise :cheesy: )

Planning to change the alternator belt in the next week or so and I know there are 2 petrol 406's at my local scrap yard. So if i find too much play in the bearing are they the same part if i find a good one off a scrap car ? BTW it will be a new belt I'm not that much of a tight wad to risk a salvaged belt :cheesy:

Looks like there's all different sorts, I'm thinking that the pulley will be a different diameter 'cos a petrol engine spins faster.

You sure that's not just the belt slipping?

Hopefully it is just a slipping belt, just trying to plan ahead and maybe save a few quid if the pump does need changing. My other thought was the tensioner pulley but hopefully that will just be a good soak in WD, will have a look when i get the old belt off.
Doing the cam belt and water pump at the same time, fun, fun fun !!!
Thanks for the info Steve

When I changed the pump on my brothers car the difference was the position of the pipes, the diameter of the pipes, and the diameter of the pulley.

I have been suffering with that problem for a good couple of yrs, popped a new aux belt on tonight, so will see how she sounds in the morning when its cold.
