You have to change the CV joint complete with the ABS ring. Not sure how much they are to change, but there are a few threads about this.

I think you can get the rings separately (ebay?) but they're not cheap either. Or you could try epoxying it...

I did see some rings £40 each wonder if that liquid metal would do as a fix

The ring has to be metal as the abs system works by magnetic pick ups so epoxy or glue wont work for you.

Not if it's to glue the original ring back in place, the pick up won't see the glue.

If the ring has broken then there is a good chance the abs light will be on as these are shrunk fit onto the cv joints at manufacture ( heated fitted and allowed to contract ) the glue is NOT going to work for you wether the sensor see's it or not. THe abs works on gaps in the metal ring and if you have noticed all the gaps wil be the same distance apart, apart from where the ring has broken which is where the fault if any should be coming from.

Ah, there's your problem - you've been taught how to do stuff properly but the rest of us had to make it up as we went :P

To be honest my car has done the same thing maybe 10 times since i have bought it, but after reading this i will bow to the bodgers :P and check also the abs rings. From the feel of the pedal though i would of sworn it would be vacuum servo unit or the non return valve on the vacuum pipe. Will report back hopefully without egg all over me face :cheesy:

hi, you can get the rings but you have to know the exact number of teeth on the ring to make sure you get the right one as there are a number of different sizes for the 406.

Once postage and packing has been added onto the the rings, it works out as cheap if not cheaper to buy a new CV joint. I did it a few weeks ago.

Some people say you can just push the rings over the cv joint and others say you need to warm the ring up in the oven so it expands to slide over and then contracts so its properly stuck to the joint. Either way you would have to ensure the cv joint face where the ring would sit is all cleaned up and cleared of corrosion else you either wont get the ring on or if you do and it doesnt sit flat then it could create weak points and possibly lead to premature failure.

Get a cv joint and have a nice new cv joint and abs ring for the same price as just the ring.

Oh meant to say ABS light gone off now front brakes "pad and discs" were f***ed basically drivers side caliper had seized one of the slide bolts at the bottom of the caliper had locked in place causing uneven wear all teh way round it has all been changed now but just waiting to see how it goes as have only done 10 miles on new brakes so not bedded in yet.

On both of my D9 hdi's they have both had the n/s/f ABS ring crack. I changed the CV joint on the 110hdi (it was a simpleknock on joint - half hours work ish from memory).

On the rapier estate, im gonna have a go at cleaning the original cv joint up, a very thin smear of chemical metal under the entire ring then holding it in place with smallish molegrips either side of the crack till it dries. If that dont work, i'll shell out another 40 quid or so for the complete joint
