How easy should a rear wheel bearing spin??Car has 120k now,but the wheel bearing wont turn freely,ie you cant spin it by hand,it just keeps stopping. There was no play in it with the wheel on,but i have been getting a noise from it(l/h side),& there is a slight grinding noise when turning the brearing.
I think i will change it anyway,as i`ve got to bolt through the handbrake shoes as 1 retainer & spring has come off

& chipped the abs ring.ABS still working though,so i think i`ve caught it in time this time, unlike the r/h side last year

Rear wheel bearings can't be changed on there own
You have to buy a complete hub, so that will sort out your chipped ABS ring out.
Just make sure you order the right one, as I ended up with ABS warning light, as my car is a 99, but a D8, and the motor factors sold me a hub for a 99, but wasn't right, and ended up in the end, having to take the hub back off, and returning for exchange of the correct one.

It could be that the handbrake shoe retainer missing is causing the backplate to be hitting the disc, therefore making the grinding noise and the wheel to turn with difficulty. The shoe could also be out of place due to the missing retainer.
To test the bearing properly you need to remove the disc and caliper and fit the wheel back on so that the bearing can spin freely.
Yes, you need to check the ABS ring some have 29 teeth some have 40 odd.

All rear brake assy removed before checking. The rear shoes were rubbing a bit,as well as some rust on the backplate.
Think i will fit another bearing/hub.£59+vat from ECP.£5 more than last aug when i did the r/h/side.
As said, its all dissmantaled,& having done the other side last year, its now a 10 min job to remove & refit a new hub.Things are better when you have a 3/4"drive socket set for the hub nut
Will just pop the wheel on in the morning & see how that spins though
Thanks guys

Well, all done now, another easy fix.No more noise.Pulling the old hub off,it came apart, but the ball bearings were very scored/worn.
Only trouble was,i put the hub, hand brake shoes, disc back on,only to find the 2 handbrake shoes retaining springs left over

DO`H
On another note, the back plate now has a rust hole in it.I`ve not made any calls yet,but can these be gotton hold of??

Did you try Ade for some? I think most breakers will be wanting to sell the whole assembly
This place is selling them for 70€ incl. German sales tax, looks like that's still cheaper with the postage (might even loose the tax if it's export).
Still ridiculously expensive for a bit of tin

I suspect breakers yard backplates would be just as bad...

Mine aren't, not that I plan to put it in any breaker's yards, but it must be possible to find some decent ones. The only problem is how much of the suspension they'd want to sell you and how much it would cost.
