Quick question - brake fluid reservoir

Does the "gauze" bit in the brake fluid reservoir filler spout come out? Mine only pulls up a but, then seems to get stuck and I can't remove it. I would like to replace my brake fluid and clean the gauze so would like to remove it to suck the old fluid out of the reservoir.
Is it removable, or should I stop trying to force it!!?

It comes out but it's a pain, I've used the forefingers of both hands back to back but I'd also be interested if anyone else had a better idea.

I knew I would get a quick answer!
I will continue swearing at it then and hope that helps to budge it! Why are simple things so difficult!
Thanks for your help.

Use a pair of pliers and a screwdriver to gently ease it out.

I thought I might damage it using blunt intruments
Is there any particular reason for its existence? I've never seen a car with something there before, apart from the lid of course.
