First niggle!

Ok chaps, I just swapped my old Escort banger for a '97 406 GLX auto

The car drove perfectly all the way home, no funny noises or issues, gearchange smooth with everything in order, until I drove the car again after I got home, and whilst the autobox is selecting gears, sometimes (its only done it twice so far) there is a clunk

I know autoboxes can be a headache when they go wrong so really hoping it is not that (as the chap was keen to swap it for the Escort)

I'm hoping its just an engine mount as 99% of the time the gearchange is lovely and smooth, I did notice the exhaust is very close to a front crossmember, Could the momentum of the engine moving be causing the exhaust to clunk off that?

I really done know where to go with it to be honest and trying to not let it dampen my enthusiast for my new motor :|

cheers for any info

I've always found auto boxes easy to catch out so perhaps it's not anything to worry about. Still, might be worth changing the oil in it as a precaution.

Thats a relief, so I assume if they'd been a problem with the box it would be clunking every change?

Yes, I plan to have the gearbox oil changed asap, as looking through the history it looks like it has'nt been changed since 2000 at 30k miles
- it's now on 97k

Any ideas (roughly) how much an independant garage would charge to do this?

thanks again for the info

Little update

Its a clonk not a clunk coming from what it sounds like the front driverside wheel, only occuring when the autobox changes gear, it only happens once or twice when driving. I can see a previous owner has changed the droplink on that wheel probably thinking it was that as it looks fairly new

The pipes and cat is brand new and it looks really close to a beam, from what I can see about a centimetre or so from it so
could it be that needing adjustment

I'm thinking engine mount and maybe that?

cheers for any info
