2001 406 EXEC HPI 2.0 EGR problem

Post by johnboy »

Hi all,

I have a 406 executive estate, it has the rare 2.0 HPI petrol engine.

Today it has failed mot on emmisions, cause of this apprently seems to be the EGR valve as it was diagnosed a while ago.

I wanted to know is it possible to blank it off at all ? what effect would this have? and also would it pass an mot with it blanked i.e wud it improve emissions enough to pass?

many thanks

john.

Hiya mate, welcome to the club :D

I also have a HPi and had the EGR valve replaced by a main stealer a few years ago.

No idea what the effect of blanking it off would be but have you tried giving it a clean?

Hiya! Thanks this is my first post!

I havent attempted to clean it as of yet, that may be my first port of call. Would you know how to remove this at all? Knowing peugeot they are a nightmare!

I used to have a V6 vectra and blanked off its EGR valve, it passed mot no probs just wondered if i could do the same on this and how to do it?

:)

Doesn't look hard to get to, couple of bolts and a miltiplug by the look of things. I've got my old one in the garage, not sure if it's knackered or just dirty, you know what main stealers are like. I've got some pics of it somewhere I can post up if you think it might help?

 We aim to please :cheesy:

Not very often often I get to have worthwhile input on here with these rocking horse poo engines, the HDi boys and normal 16 valvers have plenty to talk about, even the 2.2s and V6's seriously outnumber us

Yes there seems to be little info on these engines on the internet! I guess were the lucky ones! (or not so lucky) lol.

Im debating weather to sell the car and cut my losses as it is rather than re-mot it. Not sure what it would be worth though?

I don't reckon they're worth much at all mate, and what would you get instead for the same kinda money?

If its any consolation Dai, I would like a 2.0 HPi in my coupe. What MPG do you normally get from yours? Mine is still exactly as the manufacturer says. Even after 155k! 34.4MPG over 1500 miles mixed

I'd love one of those engines in my saloon. Better fuel economy than my 1.8, and more horses (not surprising in the slightest)

I usually get around 40mpg on a run in mine, the car is very responsive though compared to the normal 2.0 16v anyway!

What would mine be worth? its got around 145k on the clock but has been well maintained in the past, its had the common fuel pumps also replaced not all that long ago which is also another thing on this engine that gives up over time!!

Its just the fact i have no funds at the moment and cant afford to get the valve replaced, i had it mot'd yesterday so i know what needs doing, the rest of the bits are trivial really.

Its a great spec car though and has every available upgrade known to man!!

I get around 30 - 33 mpg general use, (around town and to and from work, which is rarely more than 10 miles each way at the moment) and about 40 on a good run.

Dunno the value John, I care not to look. I do know I was offered £2K trade in 2 years ago so it was probably worth about £3.5k then :frown:  . Mines just coming up to 70K now.
