Well shes burning a bit of oil. And leaking another bit. I'll get round to plugging the leak at some point but becasuse its only about 2-3 drops a day, I'm not too concerned. But the burning oil is concernig. If the car is driven at 80-100mph over 120 miles and a bit of hard acceleration in between (basically hard driving), it will burn about a litre over that distance. Which is awful!!! But I put in 10W40. I'm willing to put in much thicker oil now that the summer is approaching. Does anyone have any recommendations as I dont want to burn off the thinner stuff every week.

I've accepted that its an old car (engine wear wise) and it needs special treatment now

I'd be tempted to try some oil seal conditioner and maybe even some of that stop-smoke stuff.

But please oh please do so at your own judgement and risk (do some research first). I only say all this because if it was me and I'd got an engine burning oil then I'd be tempted to give these products a try on the basis that the engines not too healthy anyway etc.

A modern engine really shouldn't be burning oil like this. Bore wear is very rare these days and things like the big end bearings would let go first if there was a shortage of oil. I'd be looking more at valve stem seals etc. Maybe when the engine had the head work done they re-used the old seals instead of new ones? maybe even got them mixed up/wrong etc???

I don't think the engine will be happy with 20W/50 it's too thick really.

Completely new head, Completely new seals. I can guarantee that much so I'm not thinking its the valves. It could be piston rings. Do you have links to any of the products you mentioned?

I did a little research online already and I am very surprised at the amount of larger (2l plus) petrol engines that burn oil. A guy with a 07 Audi A4 is burning 1 litre every 1k.

Ironic really, diesels are reffered to as oil burners, but neither of my HDi's burned any

The Alfa twinspark engines burn a little bit of oil. It is expected that as a Twinspark owner you top up 1 litre every couple of months, checking the oil at least once a week.

Actually there are petrol engines out there which consume a lot of oil but I never associated this with Pug engines.

The VW 2.0 petrol likes oil, as do some Toyota VVT's...

Some would say the 1 ltr every 1000miles is 'within spec'.

The products I mentioned are the kind of thing you'd see in Halfords by people like Wynns etc...

Well if thats the case, I'm not too worried because I know under easy driving, the consumption is quite low, if any. But under hard acceleration, prepare to pay! I might chance some 10w50 for the summer and see how I get on. I'll buy a 5l bottle. That should do for a few months. Im just not used to oil consumption really

I might try those products too Welly. If she drinks a bit of oil over time and I manage to find a cheap source to get more (rather than the €10.95 per litre at petrol stations) I should be ok. The rocker cover gasket was replaced so perhaps the sump plug can help me with the minor oil leak.
