The clutch on my 406 estate (1999) is very heavy, I had a quote to do and it was £500, looking at the manual the job seems to be massive, is this the case, would i require many specialised tools?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi there Dave, any chance you can give us a clue on your engine? Although I'm thinking HDi 110 from the price, if so did this include a new dual mess flywheel?

Hi Dave , as Steve says knowing which engine would help , was the quote
at a main dealers ? if it was for clutch only i was quoted £420 by my local dealer
and that included the clutch , clutch and DMF flywheel about £900 , though its
doubtful you will need a flywheel . You can of course reduce these prices if
you use a reputable independant garage . All this is if you have a 110hdi .

A 1.8? Then 500 quid is way way over the top

i have a receipt for a replacement clutch kit and fitting. 180 quid. previous owner had this done about a year ago . it is from an independent garage. so round about the 200 quid mark i should think

I was quoted £720 from the dealers to do my 1.8 clutch. I ended up getting the clutch kit from Euro car parts for about £80 I think plus some new oil seals and gearbox oil. I then spent three days replacing it all myself. No real problems, apart from being able to get the gear box back onto the car. I took it slow and steady and all in cost me about £130. Still going strong today!
If you feel confident, give it a go. It's not a complicated job, just a lot of stuff has to come off to get access which takes time and effort! (And by effort I mean scrtached knuckles!)

I was quoted about £400 for the clutch on my 110 hdi from the dealers.Although Dando`s of Sodbury are cheap on labour.I dont know how there can be such a difference from the dealers

.I think they just think of a number
I have found complete DMF & clutch kits for mine for around £300,& around the same price for a solid flywheel & clutch coverstion kit.Although i have to factor labour on top.The clutch its self is cheap for mine.
But as i need the car for work, when mine needs doing it will be a garage job.Although its now on 122k miles with the original clutch.

£720 was ridiculous in my opinion, maybe it's surrey dealerships or something escalating prices?! I was quoted £330 from Mr Clutch, but the previous owner had used them already and the clutch had gone after 20,000 miles. All other quotes were about £400 mark.

Is your clutch cable or hydraulic?
If it's cable operated I would replace the cable before doing anything else.

Heavy clutches are a Peugeot Trait, ecspecially with cable clutches.
I changed my clutch cable and it went heavy again within 2 months.
I was told inside the cable theres a gel, and the gel goes hard giving you a heavy clutch
