the logbook bit for my 406 says DT but how can I tell , my 306 has a topmount intercooler . If this 406 is turbo it is abysmal performance and where the hell is the turbo located ?, 306 lets you know

You won't have an intercooler without a turbo, can you hear a whistle when you put your foot down?

Is the turbo on the TD and HDi engines not physically located down behind the engine block, between the sump and the firewall?

you should also have a intercoler by the radiator

Not all turbo diesels have an intercooler - the HDi 90 doesn't have one.

The turbo is right down the back of the engine and because the block leans back so much it's very hard to see.

Intercooler wise on the older td's I'm not sure on the 1.9 :?

The 1.9td is not a sparkling performer, more of a reliable friendly workhorse.

You've obviously not seen me driving one Welly :)

The 1.9 has a cooler, it's jammed down the front of the radiator.

@ the OP, the 1.9 TD is a super reliable unit detuned to produce 89bhp (when new) and last forever. You can retune it if you like, trading power for life expectancy. Of course if you have any mechanical faults such as a leaking turbo or dodgy injectors, your car will hardly be running at its best :)

The 1.9 XUDT was a cracking engine in ZXs and BXs, how does it handle the weight of the 406 though?

I found my bro's 1.9TD estate better than expected, pulling well from low revs and being a lot more flexible than his previous 306TD, but then, (as he puts it), 'the 406 doesn't have the Lucas non-injection pump'.
Not to mention FMIC as std.
