Drive/Aux belt

Having a look through on the Search facility there seem's to be a lot about changine the Drive/Aux belt but also changing the tensioners etc at the same time.

My Pug is a 2001 110 HDI. She has covered 112k with full service history. She had a Cambelt change at 94k. Looking at the shine and cracks in the Drive belt it looks like it needs changing!

Firstly.... Is it a difficult job to do? I can do basic services on cars. And secondly do I have to replace tensioners etc? I have been reading that worn tensioners can make a tapping sound from drivers side, well mine is making a little tapping sound :?

I've never worked on an Hdi but on the petrol it's a piece of cake. Just make sure you take a photo of the belt routing before you remove it!

is the tapping sound only heard between 2000 rpm and 3200 rpm under load by any chance?
if it is its not the tensioners, its your injectors and very very very bloody common on the HDis ,

have a listen next time your in the car, floor it in 2nd so the revs go over 3200rpm and if the sound miraculously vanishes at 3200 Rpm its not your tensioners bud.

Mine sounds like a 70's Grifter bike with a lollipop stick in the spokes its that bad now :(

It's an easy job to change the belt.If you want to know if the noise you have is related to the tensioner take off the belt, run the engine and see if the noise goes away, check the tensioner pulley for wear/noise with the belt off.
Get yourself a 15mm spanner and a small allen key....if you look at the tensioner aluminium block you will see some small holes (at the left hand side).Take your 15mm spanner and turn the bolt on the tensioner as if you were turning the pulley away from the belt, if you look at the small holes you will see that you can line them up with the tension off the belt...when they are lined up stick your allen key through the holes which will keep the tension off the belt whilst you change it.
If you decide to change the tensioner, line up these holes before you fit the new one and fit the allen key.
Either photograph the way the belt fits around the pulleys ( as Teamster suggests) or draw the position of the pulleys and belt on a piece of cardboard.

Easy peasy Kev if you're handy with the old spanners :)
