I have a car that shouldn't exist...and other problems.

Hi all,

I hope this is in the right place - mainly it concerns the engine so I guess?

I have some...well, I won't say problems, because at most they're minor inconveniences. However, in the cause of investigating them, the folks over at peugeotforums.com noticed something odd. I have a 1999 registered, pre-facelift (D8) 406...with a 1997CC HDi powerplant.

Here are the photos of the car and engine:

I was told you gents may know a bit more. I've emailed Peugeot with the VIN and engine number, so they may be able to come up with something.

On another note, let's move on to the issues.

1. http://regular-expressions.co.uk/car/IMAG0311.jpg & http://regular-expressions.co.uk/car/IMAG0312.jpg <-- beside the hazard light switch. I don't know what it is, but it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas?

2. Cigarette lighter doesn't work, but fuse is intact.

3. There's a strange creak from the passenger footwell when the engine is on or the ignition is in the "acessories" selection (where it would settle back to after turning on the engine, if I'm making any sense). It's inaudible from the outside, but quite clear inside. Tried fiddling with various switches etc to no avail, nothing seems to change it.

I also noticed, while hunting for the fusebox, that there are some wires leading to the front seats...but I'm not aware of my car having electric anything in the seats. Certainly no buttons for them! I don't have pictures for them unfortunately. I can probably get some if you really need them.

Sorry my first post is such a demand for answers - I'm just really confused by the engine/model combo!

Hi there. Umm, you have an HDi, they started fitting them at the end of the D8s - is this a problem?

1. Clock & (probably) external temp display, either dead or...?

2. Cigarette lighter burned out?

3. Recirculation flap stiff? Is it continuous or just for a few moments?

My D8 had all the wires too, no heated seats or anything (although it makes retro-fitting them a damn site easier  )

I wasn't aware they started fitting HDi's to D8's at the end, I thought it was D9 only - I feel a bit better now!

Clock actually sits to the left of the main dashboard, so maybe external temp display or A/C?

2. Could be - best way to check?

3. It''s continuous, untill I turn the ignition off.

Gah! I forget, the clock's where the D9 has it's hazard switch. In that case it'll be the external temp or trip computer, depending on level - is there a real (not a dummy) button on the end of the wiper stalk? I'd think you'd still be able to make out the display even if the bulbs have blown, so it's probably toast.

Got anything that plugs into it for power (mobile phone charger etc.)?

Continuous and nothing changes it? Think this could still be something to do with the air con, pull the glovebox out and have a squint? There's also a couple of control boxes here, perhaps there's a relay chattering in one :?

Your fuel filter seems to have 2 pipes coming out of it - mine has 3 :|

Mine too but there's at least 2 filters on HDis (maybe more, Service Box seems to have gone into limp home mode again  ), note the pipe teed into the pipe with the green band on the connector.

HDi engine was first put into the 406 late january 1999, so first ones are on a S reg

Mine is also a D8 HDi - on a private plate, but a S reg

Nope, no dummy button there. Ah well - it doesn't seem essential to the running of the car, there's a trip computer in the dash so external temp is probably the best guess.

Yeah, tried charging my phone and my hands-free kit off it, to no avail.

Alrighty. I'll have a look later on today, thanks for the tips!

My car was registered 4th Jan 1999, but I don't know what the English reg is - two years after that it was brought over to the Isle of Man and re-registered!

Was it the 90 or 110 the fitted to D8s?

If you pull out the pollen filter you'll be able to see right down to the recirculation flap and look/listen out for anything strange going on.

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3870&p=36935&hilit ... p36935it's an easy 5 min job (unlike some cars).

3 I think.

Source: Trying to get one to fit mine :x

Yours looks like the 2 pipe Bosch, there is also the 3 pipe Siemens, and the awkward to find 2 pipe Siemens 190162 like mine has.

(On mine the previous owner fitted a 3 pipe to a 2 pipe Siemens engine and capped off the spare pipe, when the cap gets loose ended up losing fuel pressure  )

Also: I see that the IoM uses the R plate system too! Must be a pain doing 45 on unrestricted roads
