Hi Guys, Im a newby to the site and am looking for some advice.
I have a 2001 1.8 406 and have owned the car for over two years without a single problem - until now.
The car became stuck in second gear and I have been to a see a mechanic who has managed to temporarily repair the problem, but it is not fixed by any means.
He has descovered that the bottom end of the gear lever sits in a `cup?' which is worn out, meaning the gear stick is unable to select a gear. Without being able to locate a new one in time (I was on holiday 220 miles from home an going home two days later) he has managed to strap the cup together with cable ties and wire to allow the gears to be selected.
HIs repair has worked in the sense that I am now home and the car made the journey without a hitch.
However, it is not going to last long.
Peugeot tell me I need to buy the whole assembly (gear stick, `cup' and both the selector and the gate cables) at a cost of £180 plus vat.
This seems extemely expensive and unnessecary to me and I am reluctant to spend so much if i dont have to.
PLease can anyone help with some advice on what to do.

Hi there. I'm afraid without seeing the offending object I can't suggest much, apart from breakers.

There seems to be a fair old variation between gear levers, three for the 1.8 D9 (facelift), one being rod, one having 3 cables and this one with two as you mention:
Image

1. 2400 N8
CONTROL LEVER
- INJECTION EW7J4 AND GEARBOX BE4R
- EW10D INJECTION AND GEARBOX BE4R
- INJECTION EW10J4 AND GEARBOX BE4R

Dealer price is 173 quid inc. V&T :?

I reckon your best bet is to start ringing breaker's yards, looking for 1.8, 2.0 and HPi 406s built after 2000 and checking for the two cable set up.

Beware odd selector cable lengths have come up before, there seems to be a variation somewhere.

I realise this probably isn't what you were hoping for but it's not something I've heard of before and this is the only thing (bar dismantling it and sticking pictures on here so we can umm and arr over them) I can think of that'll get you out of being severely rodgered at the dealers.

Isn't there a repair kit listed on servicebox? Can't remember what it included but I do recall it was pretty expensive and would take a fair old bit of effort to fit...

There is but it only seems to feature the cable clips, the gaskets and the screws, nothing of any use at all.
