Work this one out.....

Some of you may have read my previous thread on my HDi's tick over problem:

But the following happened to me on Friday, and I'm totally mystified.

Travelling along the M62 west at around 05.00 on my way to work, and I'm giving it the beans, like you do, and at 90mph, my engine cuts out, and the eml comes on. I pull over, and the engine refuses to start the first 2 times on the turn of the key, and then eventually fires up. the eml stays on, and I get to work. At the end of my shift, I get in the car, start it, and get home. I then disconnect the battery, and leave it off overnight, and yesterday, reconnect it, and no eml light, and the lumpy tickover seems to have gone. :shock:

So, so good so far.

Ideas?

None. Perhaps the lumpy idle was unrelated but resetting the ecu has got rid of a glitch :?

Friend of mine has a theory though Steve.

Maybe there WAS an air lock in it, and at high speed it has been pressurised enough to blow it through one injector, and because there was a nano second of no fuel in that injector, it has thrown up the eml.

Disconnecting the battery looks like the ecu has reset.

am going to try this with my car tonight as ive had the same problem changed the fuel pump fuel filter fuel rail sensor bled it to make sure no air was in it cleaned egr valve so going to disconnect battery and see if your method works

Hold on Batman.

Set off down the M1 today at our local junction, floored the throttle, and it did it again. Engine cut out, and the eml came on. :?

It would seem that under hard acceleration the car doesn't like it, so I'm guessing it has to be electrical rather than mechanical.

Maybe the fuel pump is on it's way out and is unable to sustain the pressure for sustained heavy throttle :?

Have you changed fuel filters and lift pump filters etc etc etc recently?
it could be fuel starvation if it only happens under load,
i have no evidence for what im saying im just thinking out loud, maybe a failing high pressure pump, or a restriction somewhere in the fuel system?

Maybe a fault code read out might be worth the money, it could answer your question in a flash or it could just raise more questions :?

as i said im no mechanic and am only musing on what it could be.

The lift pump is a brand new item fitted last week, but here's a strange thing. Got in the car this morning, and the eml light has gone off overnight without disconnecting the battery.

Is there someone near Wakefield with Peugeot Planet available, cos I'd love to know what the hell is going on, but don't particularly want to give the stealers the money for a diagnostic?

It was the typical lift pump wearing out scenario.

Car has done 136k, and the pump started playing up so much that one day it wouldn't start, so got recovery out, and he whacked the bottom of the tank, and it started, but he did warn that it was the start of the downward spiral for the lift pump, and to replace asap, which I did.

Then came all of what you have read so far.

I'm contemplating buying an obd reader myself to read the fault and see what it is, but don't know if they are any good, and would like to know if anyone else has used one, and if so, is it the obd2 I need?

mines is still doing the same diagnostics is saying something about low pressure from fuel pump could it be possible that because my car has high mileage the injectors are needing replaced when its sitting in idle its rough sounds as if its going to cut out i read that egr valve could cause the rough tick over if its blocked but that doesnt explain y the car cuts out or explains y the car goes into limp mode. i drove my car last night and the eml came on for no reason car went into limp mode and to be honest it sounded like a tractor stopped the car for 2mins switched her back on and it was fine

guys ... am only throwin ma tuppence worth in here, as I`m picking up vibes here an there as I have trouble just now as well...
I have been told if you dissconnect the Battery you will incurr a lot of hassel to get it to perform good again...

also that code about the low pressure going to the pump. well it could be the lift pump in the tank or yes a new or a recon High pressure pump.. also the solednoid at the side of it that regulates the fuel goin into the pump. these are only thoughts mind you...I wish we dint have all this computer stuff.. my pal has a VW Vento.. goes great NO computer stuff... :x

ahhh i see its the high pressure fuel pump regulator i can get my hands on one of them 9 times out of 10 thats whats wrong with the pump and dont have to replace the actual pump
