As I was coming back from France my car stated to develop a st-st-st-stutter at low revs, thought it was the throttle position sensor and have since cleaned it and reset it, problem is slightly better but starting to think it is the coil pack giving up the ghost as the car was very reluctant to start one day last week, which is unusual for the beast. Thinking next step is give the spark plugs a change and if that doesn't work it's going to be a new coil pack!
Anyone any suggestions where I can pick up a cheap one for a 98 1.8 16v LX?

Have you looked on the Kn-Kn-Kn-Knowledge base?

There's a thread about common running/spluttering probs with that engine - various sensors and whatnot to remove/clean etc.

I've had (gone for now) the stuttering (and rough idle) problem. I replaced the stepper motor (cured the rough idle), replaced the coil pack (no difference), disconnected the lambda probe and the car drove well - so I replaced the lambda probe and stuttering came back.

Since then I've replaced the original lambda probe and coil pack, I've taken off the throttle position sensor to measure it with a multimeter, and I disconnected the MAP sensor and started the car a couple of times (which led it stalling immediately). On reconnecting the MAP sensor it hasn't stuttered since. I'm assuming that the contacts were bad (it was the only sensor that I didn't see to check the connections). But then I too assumed it was/could be a fault with the throttle position sensor as it was stuttering between 2200 and 3500 revs - just about where the normal pedal position would rest when cruising.

Anyway, I have a spare good coil pack that is for my 1999 1.8 16v Rapier (part number 9629210680) which you can have for the same price that I bought it for from eBay (£18 + postage) if you're interested...
