Smokin' 2.1td (not in a good way)

Hi all, I'm new to the forum and actually I don't currently own a Pug, however I have in the past and that's why I chose a Pug 2.1td engine to go into my VW camper.
Anyway, last Friday I managed to start the newly converted engine for the first time and after a bit of messing about it fired into life. My eletion was short lived because it was smoking like no mans business, I thought the smoke would clear after a few minutes of running but alas no !
Added to that is, there is no increase in revs when I hit the go pedal.
I've checked for blockages in the airflow pipes and cannot see anything, I ran my finger inside the turbo exhaust outlet and it was very oily - is the problem that the engine is a dud or could it be something less painful.
Any thoughts much appreciated.
