XUD Engine mangement light on

Post by Doggy »

The EML has started coming on at tickover, (goes out as soons as you touch the throttle), on my bro's 98 1.9TD estate.
Just wondered if anyone else had had similar behaviour on theirs?

Based on my semi-recent experience, if there's a battery or alternator fault i.e. the battery isn't charging for some reason, the battery light stays on at half brightness. Well, either that or your motor won't start.

No idea what'd trigger the EML TBH, does the HBOL include it in their trouble shoot lists?

[EDIT]
pistonheads.com wrote:EML on those is usually either EGR or preheaters. If the preheater circuit is one the blink it can throw the EML. Usually the relay infront of the battery that goes (aluminium box with cooling fins, if it gets hot when preheating then it's working). Getting the codes read may be an idea, though. If it's a 2003 or later then an ordinary OBDII reader will lift the codes, before 2003 you'll need a GM TechII or similar as they're not OBDII compliant.

Hooked up to PP2000 tonight - fault is injection advance error, (or words to that effect). Looking at running parameters, you can see the 'set' angle is about 3 degrees and the actual about 20 degrees. Both move as you rev it up, but never really get close to each other.

I think this means:
Injection advance is ECU contolled via a continuously varaible actuator of some kind, which has position feedback.
ECU can 'see' the advance is wrong, so lights the EML.
When on full throttle, under load, advance angle must be about 20 degrees, so EML goes out briefly.
Actuator is sticking - possibly due to veg oil, (though many swear by these car's suitability for this fuel).

Told him to bung some injector cleaner in it, preferably via fuel filter bowl.

Fault only appeared yesterday, initially only on tickover, then tickover + light throttle, now on constantly, apart from on full load. Sounds more 'clattery' too - another sign of over-advanced injection timing?

HDi, anyone?

Change the fuel filter.

Once the filter is blocked the pressure of the fuel entering the pumps drop and the pump can't pressurise itself correctly.

Well, he's changed the filter and it sounds MUCH better, EML still comes on at tickover, though much less than previously. He's going to run it a bit more to see if it clears, (has only done a few miles since filter change so far). Failing that, injector cleaner next.....

Tank strainer can also block giving a lower pressure inside the pump.

Get him to check the connector to the lift sensor on the 2nd injector too, if that works lose the advance system goes nuts and clatters like hell.

Tank strainer already checked, (was OK).

Sorry, for being a bit thick here, is this something, 'extra', on No.2 cylinder injector, or something on the pump?

Many thanks for your help, Stevie 8)

use the injector cleaner when he`s down to 1/4 tank or less ,its more effective unless he wants to add in filter bowl when changing filter

Thanks, guys. It's now sorted itself out completely, but if there's any further sign, he'll put some cleaner in. 8)
