Re: replacement cat
As far as I know, there is no requirement to have a catalytic converter on a diesel. (Though I would like to see more evidence that this is all above board.)
Moreover, it is often considered desirable to remove the catalytic converter.
Just thinking about it, if we can get a straight answer about the legality of removing the catalytic converter then I think I'll get mine done. My local tyres and exhausts place is pretty good -- just tell em what you want and they get on with it. (But I think I'd keep the old cat just in case.)

Re: replacement cat
Some people have had a repair flexi-section welded in, with good results, though some comments about not so quiet afterwards have also been seen.
Online Automotive do a cat for about £75 & a complete exhaust for about £170. Not the best, but adequate - my bro's got one on his 1.9TD, (chosen because they do a system without cat, as fitted to very early 406's).

2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Re: replacement cat
It's also worth checking why the flexi section blew and I'll bet the engine mount at the lower rear of the engine is allowing too much movement.......
(if I had a pound for every time I've said that......)
(I'd have 16 pounds btw)
