Intermitent speedo fault

Hi,
As title, the speedo stops working and the revs reduce and the mileometer stops reading for no apparent reason, usually soon after starting up, then after a while it clears its self and is ok for the rest of the journey. Any ideas?
BTW my car is 2000 (W reg) 110 HDI Executive estate, 143000 miles.

Your not alone, I have this problem too and I havnt got around to fixing it. From reading around the internet the problem most probably is something called a 'bevel drive'. I think its the little wheel type sensor which is attached to the gearbox. According to what I've read it appears to be a pig of a job, requiring the removal of a drive shaft. There are a couple of other things which it could be but this appears to be the most likely. I can live with an intermitent speedo but like you I find the car doesn't run smoothly when it stops working, it must run through the ecu and effect the fueling somehow. Hopefully someone else on here will have a better idea.

Whack the top of the dash, does it work now? If so, dry joints on the connector at the back of the instrument cluster.

Hi, Thanks for the replies, but done all that and still the same. I had to get the clutch and flywheel replaced last week, ouch, so the gearbox was removed and speedo drive also, and still the same problem, so will try and find damp connections as suggested.
I have noticed that the often speedo stops after going over a bump or a section of rough road, so still some work to do!

An interesting read this one.......ive owned my 406 for 5 years and this problem (speedo stopping for a few moments) has only happened about three or four times but recently in the sub zero temps it reoccurred and seemed to be staying this time, for the first time i also noticed the car was running rough,i was just going along a straight road at about 50mph.......then i switched off my seat heater that had been on from leaving home some 5mins earlier and the car picked up and and the speedo came back in the same instant !
For the first time my engine management light has come(days before this) on and stayed on although the car runs perfect in every way and also will rev out so whatever triggered it cannot remain as a problem i'm thinking......the day it came on the only fault was the car began to accelerate with no throttle input ! all this is linked no doubt and in my oppinon damp related.
Can anyone let me know the type of reader/connection needed for my car as i may purchase my own.........this aside i'm sure you would almost all agree these cars are just brilliant, the best allrounder ive owned in 30 years of cars.

speedo problems in d9s are usually bsi related, check the passenger footwell for rusty connectors.

I just fixed this problem on my 2.0 petrol. In my case the speedo would show flashes of life when I whacked the top of the dash.A bit of electrical spray solved it.

On the diesel it seems like the most common problem is the speedo interface box, a small box situated high up behind the glove compartment box. I've heard from a pug mechanic that this is a rather common fault on the 2.1 diesel.

Im glad for you mate- did you spray into the 2 connectors? Think i'll give that a try. If it was the drive on g-box then it wouldnt be failing for 10secs every now & then. Positive it something similar to your fault

I've had that. The local Peugeot garage replaced the speed sensor unit in the gearbox and relieved me of about 100 pounds. Problem solved, never returned.
