Exhaust and Tappets

Two new problems today.

Firstly I can hear the tappets ticking under my bonnet and wondered roughly how much a garage would charge to adjust these?

Secondly there is an inch long gash in my exhaust system just in front of (towards the front of the car) the rear expansion chamber where the pipe meets it. It sounds awful and dose anyone know what part of the exhaust I need to replace and roughly how much that would be/where is best to source it?

Cheers in advance guys.

There is no way of adjusting any tappets on modern engines, they're all hydraulic lifters with followers/buckets.

Ticking may be due to a serious lack of oil or sometimes if the engine is over fuelling it can make the injectors tick quite loudly - check your fuel consumption and check for any unusual soot in the exhaust tail pipe. Perhaps your oxygen sensor or something is duff and making it over fuel.

Exhaust wise it sounds like you need a new middle section (from the CAT to the rear silencer) this would probably cost about £100.00 fitted but ring around! always try the little independent places too rather than going to the big nationals first.

On the exhaust, to get you through why not try £6 on high temperature instant gasket RTV silicone - it's stickier than standard exhaust repair putty that normally falls off.
